Result of ‘short-termism’: JP

Lok Satta party president Jayaprakash Narayan on Saturday lambasted the Telugu Desam government in the State blaming its ‘extreme short-termism’ for the call money-cum-sex scam that has rocked Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing the local media, he said the call money episode was a classic example of ad-hocism of the Chandrababu Naidu government.

He demanded that the government deal effectively with those found guilty in the scandal by distinguishing between the three key components — sex racket, loan sharking and the informal credit system in operation. “There seems to be no way out for the State government which has not been focussing on what needs to be done. Be it the cyclone in Visakhapatnam or Godavari Pushkarams, the short-termism has come through very glaringly and the call money scam is the latest in the list,” he said.

He said the government first messed up the cooperative sector by turning it defunct and then went ahead with loan waivers to farmers, which in turn, destroyed the credit network.

“Without credit architecture, no economy can survive,” he warned.

He said the quality of education and health was dismal.

Kejriwal should restrain his language: JP

Lok Satta Party founder president has taken strong exception to the wordy duel in the wake of CBI raids in the office of Principal Secretary of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

In a statement here on Wednesday, Dr. Narayana said the heated exchanges between political leaders would bring down the dignity of rule of law. It is the responsibility of the CBI to gather evidence and prove it in the court. If the allegations are backed by basic evidence, then the system should act.

If CBI actions were suspected then the Central Vigilance Commission should review the case. Mr. Kejriwal should not use intemperate language against the Prime Minister. Now, Lok Pal should be constituted and confidence should be created in public, he said in a statement.

GHMC misappropriated funds

For the last six years, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has misappropriated funds to the tune of Rs 3,630 crore, alleged members of the Lok Satta Party, on Sunday.

"As much as Rs 451 crores lapsed because the former corporators, did not spend the money. In the last six years the civic officials collected as much as Rs 13,000 crores in terms of taxes, of which Rs 3,630 went into the pockets of bureaucrats and people's representatives", said B Sambi Reddy, general secretary, Lok Satta Party (GHMC). He also alleged that Rs 14 crores was spent on lavish lunch buffets and corporators' tours which did not serve any purpose. Sambi Reddy , insisted that instead of leaving the money in the hands of such corrupt officials, the workflow of the GHMC must be decentralised.

"Let the tax-payers be given the money so that they can decide on what and where to spend the money", he said.

No serious efforts taken to curb corruption, says JP

Lok Satta Party founder-president Jayaprakash Narayan said that the Central and the State governments were only enacting dramas in the name of anti-corruption struggle without taking steps for multi-pronged institutional mechanisms to curb corruption.

Interacting with the Lok Satta Party leaders on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day here on Wednesday, Dr. Narayan said that Anti-Corruption Bureau, Collectorates and municipal corporations which should have kept in place mechanisms to prevent corruption were confined to observing perfunctory anti-corruption weeks. It was thanks to the efforts of Lok Satta in 1998 in creating awareness about irregularities in weights and measures in petrol bunks, 85 per cent of irregularities in weighing measurements were rectified. As a result, people all these years had benefited to the tune of Rs. 2 lakh crore, he said.

Subsequently LSP had strived for Right to Information Act, creation of Lokpal, Lokayukta and Ombudsman setup from Delhi to district level, income tax exemptions on donations to political parties, local courts Act, Judicial Commission for appointment of High Court Judges, open auction for allocation of coal, iron and other natural resources after 2G spectrum case irregularities were exposed, Citizen Services Guarantee Act, local body empowerment, allotment of per capita funds, etc., he said.
